Six Months!

The hubby and I took a wonderful trip to Chatham Bars Inn last weekend to celebrate our six month anniversary. We'd never spent any time there before in the winter and I have to say I almost enjoyed it as much as the summer! They were completely booked - I was shocked. But such good deals were to be had and sunny weather in the forecast that everyone had made the last minute trek to the Cape! I highly recommend heading to your favorite resort in the off season.

We were upgraded to a wonderful suite with fabulous views, a fireplace and tons of lounge space. Another perk of the off season, no one is booking those fancy rooms so your way more likely to get an upgrade.

We had a delicious dinner at the Sacred Cod Tavern - asparagus fries, their amazing fish and chips, lobster nachos and creme brulee! (It was a celebratory trip after all) We walked town, visiting all the little shops I never go to cause I'm working on my tan. I spent the afternoon reading in this wonderful room enjoying the beautiful views, drinking cocktails and watching the golf tournament in the Tavern. Something you would never get a chance to do in the summer and it was so wonderful and relaxing!

We also got to have dinner at our absolute favorite restaurant in Chatham, Impudent Oyster. I would say going in the off season made things less crowded but I made a reservation 6 weeks ahead of time and we still had to wait - this place is just packed every day of the year! Lastly we toped off the weekend with Chatham Bars Inn's amazing Sunday Brunch Buffet. I'm not a huge buffet person but this is just so delicious and such a special treat! And something you'd never eat if you had to put on a bathing suit in the next two hours!

It was incredibly weird to be back for the first time since the wedding, revisiting all the places we'd been for a hot, stormy week - now cold, frosty and equally windy!

I love reliving all the details of the wedding and hope to make this an annual trip. And what I would say to everyone else is plan a trip to your favorite summer resort in the next few months. Deals are great! Chatham Bars has been offering specials for $150 a night (a steal!) or keep your eyes peeled for a Groupon or other offer for your favorite vacation spot. You'll get to do all the fun things you never get to do in the summer, the crowds will be smaller, you won't feel guilty eating and drinking all day and it's a great way to shake those mid-winter blues as we wait patiently for the arrival of spring.

Wanted to re-share this post about adding a penny to your tulips. I'd kindve forgotten all about this tip until my mom brought me some beautiful white tulips and two days later they were all floppy. With a mild winter and spring-like days already aplenty, I've decided to turn my attention toward full spring ahead. I've got the itch all the sudden to buy bathing suits, update all my monogrammed totes and stock up on the new brightly colored summer shorts. Stamford Restaurant Week

Now that I don't get to enjoy the overload that is New York Restaurant Week anymore (so many choices, so much delicious food!), Stamford Restaurant Week will have to be the next best thing. However Stamford isn't short on options either, it is going to be overwhelming to decide where to try!

Here is the list of participating restaurants and menus where available. Running from Sunday Feb 26th through Sunday March 11th. Lunch starting at $10.12 and Dinner starting at $15.12. Definitely on my list to try are Bar Rosso and ZAZA, I've been wanting to check them out for awhile so what better time!

Diners, Drive Ins and Dives

After hearing about a most delicious concoction called a "Jake's Burger," PK and I decided to set out Guy Fieri style to check out a little diner called Jake's Place in Darien. Right off ex 10 in a small trailer style building, we could tell from first glance that this was going to be a home run.

The famous "Jake's Burger" is a small hamburger with cole slaw and Russian dressing inside a grilled cheese. I don't have a great word to describe it other than one of the best things I've ever eaten. The burger was cooked perfectly, melty cheese, crunchy coleslaw, tangy dressing and a big side of crispy krinkle fries with a pickle. And all this for under $7. We think even Guy would approve!

Jake's is open for breakfast and lunch, Mon-Sat. Eat at the counter or one of the small tables and enjoy service from their friendly staff. The perfect stop for a quick lunch if you're traveling along 95 or a place to enjoy a casual, authentic diner breakfast. We'll definitely be back!

Today at Pet Pantry, Valentines Day kisses will be free for the taking! Join ECAD as they bring in two yellow lab puppies for their 'Smooch A Pooch' event. Guests of all ages will have an opportunity to have their photos taken with these six month old loves. All photos will be encased in a card size frame. Who could ask for a better Valentine?

Blogger Book Club

While I really liked The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Nighttime I think all the great reviews set my expectations a little high. Good, but not my most favorite book ever. I think maybe I need to steer clear of reading too much about a book before I dive in.

So here are two books I know almost nothing about except they've been recommended by friends and at first glance they look great!

First up, Rules of Civility by Amor Towles. Set in New York City in the 1930s, this sounds like it will be The Great Gatsby meets Gossip Girl. Yes please!

And secondly, The Bungalow by Sarah Jio. This one set in the 1940s in Bora Bora chronicles a love story amidst the war in the Pacific.

This is more national news than FFC news but I know everyone will be excited about this new collaboration! Coming in June, Trina Turk is designing a special line for Banana Republic. I'm sure you all remember my enthusiasm over the Calypso/Target merger last summer! This isn't quite as exciting as it doesn't boast the $30 price tags that made shopping for fashionable clothes at Target so much fun. But this Southern California inspired, 60 piece Trina Turk capsule should provide some stylish new wardrobe updates for summer 2012 that are easy on the wallet. Sadly I can only track down one image from the collection - I certainly look forward to seeing more of what they have to offer!

If you haven't tried Darien's newest Italian restaurant, Cesco's Trattoria, I recommend you call them right up and make a reservation for this weekend! Located in Goodwives shopping center, this classic Italian restaurant offers fabulous food in a relaxed and fun atmosphere. When we arrived at 8pm there was a family with their two young sons, a rowdy table of couples, an elderly duo and a full bar - a restaurant that truly appeals to any audience. Their food is beyond good and they have the service to match. Owner Aldo is out on the floor, greeting patrons, discussing specials and helping to create the warm family atmosphere. First to our table was this delicious antipasto platter. A great way to kick off the meal and let us munch while we enjoyed our wine and perused the menu.

And then a special treat from Aldo, a pasta dish not on the menu. Beat and ricotta "ravioli" with a sage butter sauce. It honestly might be one of the tastiest things I've ever eaten. I have to give my parents credit for receiving this treat as they frequent Cesco's on an almost weekly basis.

Then on to the main courses. The specials list was a big hit that night - a paparadelle pasta with roasted red pepper cream sauce, italian sausage and broccoli as well as a roasted veal chop with a marsala wine sauce, mushrooms and asparagus. Both we're amazing! Highlights from the menu also include the tagliatelle bolognese, spaghetti alla carbonara, halibut burre blanc, veal picatta, ossobuco and chicken milanese. All receiving very high marks! The only dish not receiving rave reviews was the spaghetti alle vongole - if everything was a home run you'd think I wasn't being honest.

And last but very certainly not least was a delicious bread pudding toped with vanilla ice cream and hot fudge. This alone is worth coming back for!

Needless to say we're hooked! I look forward to coming back often and making my way through all the wonderful entrees. It's one of the few restaurants I've been to recently where every time I leave I think "I can't wait to come back and try that other dish I was debating."

Winter Beauty Essentials

I've been on a master quest recently to find a new shampoo for my winter hating hair. It's been dry and brittle and generally creating a little halo of spiky straw around my head. I finally found a solution to my quest with Nexxus Color Assure Radiant Color Care Shampoo. I now have happy, bouncy, summer loving hair again!

This little venture got me thinking about all the other beauty essentials I just can't live without once the temperature drops below 50.

My true "can't live without" moisturizer - Aveeno Positively Radiant Daily Moisturizer in SPF 15. I have rather dry itchy skin but I'm also prone to a breakout of two and this has proven to be the perfect cream for me. Light but nourishing and I feel like it makes my skin glow, perfect for year round. I even use it as my sunblock - it comes in SPF 30 for those more sun conscious consumers. A must have! Second in my winter arsenal is Clarins Eau Lactee Auto-Bronzante. I for one believe in a year round tan and as I'm not lucky enough to have monthly vacations to the beach I need to rely instead on this great self tanner. A subtle glow for your face, it creates a perfect base for your favorite bronzer and helps me avoid that whole "Twillight" thing I have going on every January. Available at fine department stores or specialty drug stores.

When you really need to pull out the big guns my secret weapon is Laura Mercier Tinted Moisturizer. This offers a wonderful foundation for when you have a busy day or night out in the cold. Layer over your traditional moisturizer, let dry and then highlight with bronzer. You'll have a sunkissed glow that will stay put throughout the day, even when that cold wind tries to whip the tan right off you! Available at Sephora and fine department stores.

Lastly, if you don't have one of these in your makeup bag then you've spent one too many mornings looking fatigued. Yves Saint Laurent Touche Eclat Radiant Touch is a miracle worker. This luminizing pen highlights skin and erases all signs of dark circles and redness. Dab a little under your eyes and around your noise and chin and voila, no one will know you had one to many pinots last night! Available at Sephora and fine department stores.

Cooking Classes

If you remember this post from back in March I've been dying to try cooking classes at Aux Delices for quite some time! I finally got my chance last week and it was so much fun. Lynn, who runs the classes, is such a great teacher and she had so many wonderful tips and techniques to share. This was one of her hands on classes - Quick Family Dinners - and we actually got to cook and then eat everything we made. I don't know if I've ever been so full before! On tap for the class was

Spaghetti All'Amatriciana - a delicious sauce with onion, pancetta and hot pepper flakes
Incredibly Juicy Cheeseburgers with Chipotle Mayo - mmm!
Chicken Milanese - crispy chicken with tomatoes and arugula
Chicken Piccata - with a yummy lemon butter sauce

She also taught us a few tricks - always heat a pan before adding oil for searing, it keeps food from sticking. Fry items in canola oil, olive oil changes composition at high heat. Use Diamond kosher salt when cooking. Get a fish spatula, its flexible and great for flipping burgers.

Here's the recipe for the Chipotle Mayo
1 cup mayonnaise
1 tablespoon lime juice
2 tablespoons chopped cilantro
1 tablespoon chipotle peppers in adobo sauce (chopped)
2 tablespoons honey
Kosher salt
Black pepper

In a small bowl, whisk together all the ingredients and taste. And salt and pepper and stir to blend. Top your favorite burger or sandwich.

Snowy Saturday

Hope all you FFCites are enjoying our first real snow of the season! I was so excited that I finally got to try out my new Sorel boots today. They have been sitting by the door since Christmas looking at me so sadly, just waiting for a good romp in the snow. I gave them a nice little spin around Todds Point and they were warm, cozy and very furry. I love them. Prepare yourself for the next snowstorm with a pair of your own.

Brunch Blues

The one thing the FFC area, especially Greenwich, is lacking is great breakfast spots! Growing up we used to frequent the Driftwood Diner in Darien almost every weekend. Housed in a trailer, with a grill that probably hadn't been cleaned in 25 years, they had the most delicious, authentic diner food! Then they upgraded and moved into a real restaurant, and while good, it was just never the same.

This place isn't a greasy spoon but it's one of the few places in Greenwich that offers good, inexpensive breakfast in a nice atmosphere. The Cos Cobber is located at 31 East Putnam Ave in Cos Cob. Serving breakfast from 7-11 on weekdays and 8-1 on weekends (one of my friends with a baby noted it's one of the few places that you can get breakfast in town early) their prices are actually incredible reasonable for the area. Two eggs with toast and home fries will run you just $4.50, a steal! They also make great omelets, pancakes and french toast. Unfortunately we tried them once for dinner and it wasn't a home run, so for now we're just going to promote their great breakfast!

Fire Safety

After the very tragic fire in Stamford over the holidays, I have been thinking a lot in the last few weeks about fire safety. With the New Year here and many resolutions being made, I think it's an important time to make a resolution that could affect your life a lot more than losing ten pounds. Take five minutes to read this great post by Summer is a Verb (she's very witty but all the important information is there too), check the smoke and carbon monoxide detectors in your home and replace the batteries, purchase and learn to use a fire extinguisher (when your oven is on fire is not the time to be reading the directions or googling), and think about an escape plan for your family in the event of an emergency. I think the ladder in SIAV's post is a excellent investment. A friend of mine slept on the third floor of an older home one of her years in college and her parents got her one of these ladders - what could be a true lifesaver in a house fire. Unfortunately it often takes a neighborhood tragedy to finally push us to do these tasks we've been meaning to do for a long time. So please take this time to check these items off your list, it's a resolution we can all get behind!

Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs

Another favorite Christmas gift from the hubby was The Meatball Shop Cookbook - perhaps one could see this as a gift to me, for him! But I'm very excited to start trying all the fun recipes straight from The Meatball Shop in NYC. Hopefully my reward for making him all these yummy dinners will be a trip into the city to try the real thing!

Surprisingly this cookbook also includes recipes for wonderful sauces, side dishes, vegetables and desserts. They are really turning meatballs into a meal! I think my first foray into meatballing is going to be the Buffalo Chicken Meatballs with Blue Cheese Dressing. I'm thinking about finding a way to make these into a sandwich smothered in dressing. Yum! Below is the recipe to make these as a delicious appetizer. Perfect for football this weekend!

Ingredients

2 tablespoons olive oil
1/2 cup (1 stick) unsalted butter
3/4 cup Frank's RedHot hot sauce, plus more for serving
2 pounds ground chicken, preferably thigh meat
2 large eggs
2 ribs celery, minced (about 1 cup)
1 2/3 cups dried breadcrumbs
2 teaspoons coarse salt
Blue Cheese Dressing
Celery sticks, for serving

Directions

Preheat oven to 450 degrees. Evenly coat a large rimmed baking sheet with olive oil and set aside.
Place butter and hot sauce in a small saucepan over low heat. Cook, whisking, until butter is melted and hot sauce is well incorporated. Remove from heat and transfer to a large bowl; let cool to room temperature, about 10 minutes.
Add chicken, eggs, celery, breadcrumbs, and salt to bowl with butter mixture; using your hands, mix until well combined. Roll chicken mixture into firm, 1-inch round balls and place on prepared baking sheet; arrange the meatballs in rows so that they are touching on all sides. Transfer to oven and bake until cooked through, about 15 minutes.
Take out of oven and let stand 5 minutes before removing from baking sheet. Place on a serving platter and drizzle with hot sauce; serve with dressing and celery sticks.

When I first moved to the suburbs we had a pretty active book club going but with everyones busy schedules, weddings, travel etc we've had a tough time keeping it going. And surprisingly one of my New Years resolutions is to plan less - I often worry I overwhelm my friends and family with the amount of planning I try to get them involved in! However I LOVE to read and I really miss our book club. In 2010 I read 45 books, that's almost a book a week. 2011 saw quite a dip so this year I'd like to try to get back in my reading groove. So I figured I'd throw out a book to my blog followers and see who'd like to read it with me!

Next on my book list is The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time. Published in 2003, I guess I missed this great pick while I was busy wearing togas, eating pizza and trying to avoid reading at all costs. Now as a more responsible adult I'm glad it crossed my path again. It sounds like a fascinating story and I can't wait to dive in. Who's with me?!

2011 was certainly my best year to date so I was looking forward to ringing in 2012 with some great friends - two of who got married this year and two of who got engaged. 2011 was a big year for all! We went up to Okemo to celebrate and despite the lack of snow we still had a wonderful time.

My favorite part of New Years Eve was watching the ball drop on our iPhone bundled up around a fire pit and setting off these wonderful 'Wish Lanterns'.

I had never seen these lanterns before and they were the perfect way to send 2011 off in style. Make a wish, light the lantern, wait for it to fill with hot air and then off it sails. Sending your wish clear into 2012! These lanterns do have open flames so be very careful where you set them flying, based on the wind and the weather their flight pattern can be pretty erratic. We had a few "oh god" moments but all was safe.

My favorite craft project last season was creating this fabulous display for all our holiday cards. This season we have received WAY more cards than we ever have in the past (I just love checking the mail in December!) so only the first ones made it onto the wreath. Paul Tudor Jones Lights Display

It wouldn't be the holiday season without a trip to see the Paul Tudor Jones Christmas Light Spectacular! (my name for it :) ) Located in Belle Haven next to the Belle Haven Club - ask for directions at the first guard house, there will be off duty cops to guide you along your way. The average wait is about an hour (we've tried early, late, weekend and after work all to the same outcome) but it's totally worth it. The show begins at dark and runs until roughly 9pm. However with an hour wait they will start turning cars away around 8.

Eight cars at a time pull up in front of Jones's house to see the light show synchronized to music on 90.5FM. The show runs about 5 minutes and features new designs every season. If you live in the Greenwich area I highly recommend making the trip between now and Christmas.

If you don't live in the area you can sneak a bootleg peek (filming is not allowed) at this years show with Do You Hear What I Hear, sung by Jones' daughter. But if you are going to check it out do yourself a favor and don't ruin the surprise by watching this link!

First Married Christmas

I've been a busy elf over here in Greenwich trying to get all organized for our first married Christmas! Top on the list was sending out our first real Christmas card. I was so excited for this project until I realized what a project sending out 115 holiday cards is!! This ate up about a weeks worth of blogging. Note to self - do not attach address labels late night after a dinner party with your girlfriends - this will result in having to peel most of them off and redo the next day. I loved how they turned out and was so excited to get them in the mail!

Next on the docket was getting our first "grown up" tree set up. Unfortunately we picked out our tree in the dark and it was a little big for where we usually put it. We moved around some furniture and voila - I think I like this years placement the best!

One of my favorite holiday event is this Sunday, Dec 4th. Join Rowayton locals for Light Up Rowayton from 4:30-6:00 in Pinkney Park. Festivities begin with a tree lighting and carolers, then take a stroll down Rowayton Ave to see holiday decorations and join in on the 7th Annual Egg Nog Contest. Kicking off at 5:15, guests can taste submissions for best local egg nog. If you're like any of the men in my life then be sure to bring a little flask to spice up your cup. It's Finally Here!

I feel like it's Christmas morning - the big day has finally arrived! (What I really want to say here is that the newest Twilight move is out!!!) But what I'm actually talking about is The Junior League of Greenwich Holiday Boutique opens today! After months of hard work everything comes down to the next three days so PLEASE come out and shop for a great cause. We have so many fabulous vendors and so many great events throughout the weekend. We enjoyed a great dinner this weekend at Nicholas Roberts in South Norwalk. The sister location to Nicholas Roberts Fine Wines in Darien, this cute 24 seat cafe serves contemporary American cuisine while you bring your own wine or beer. Corkage fee is $5 a bottle but if you buy your wine at Nicholas Roberts Fine Wines there is no corkage fee. No reservations and cash only, everything about the restaurant says casual bistro.

On our order was the Rosemary Sauteed Fresh Shrimp with radish and watermelon salad; Arugula and Parmesan Salad with pancetta, olive and lemon vinaigrette; Organic Chicken with potato latke and sauteed spinach; NR Cheeseburger with caramelized onion, mushrooms, bacon, cheddar and (AMAZING) french fries; Mustard and Herb Crusted Pork Loin with Maker's Mark mac & cheese and brussel sprouts (4 of us had this and everyone left with a clean plate!); and lastly the homemade Coconut Crusted Carrot Cake -mmm!

Their breakfast menu also looks amazing, I definitely plan on heading back to try that soon. BYO mimosas? Yes please!

PK's Turkey Chili

With snow in the forecast we figured it was time to break out the hubby's chili recipe. I didn't think I liked chili - I would never order it by choice or eat it at someone else's house but I figured if I helped make it and knew exactly what was in it I might get on board. And low and behold it was delicious!

Serve with shredded cheese, sour cream, tortilla chips and corn bread! I had to use the old staple - Jiffy corn bread mix. Cook according to directions, then spread butter over the top of the corn bread and let cool. Yum! In all honestly, I think I really just liked the chili as a vehicle for toppings and sides : )

Turkey Chili

Serves Four:

1 lb. ground turkey

1 garlic

1 sweet onion

1 red bell pepper

1 box of sliced mushrooms

1 tbsp chili powder

1 can whole tomatoes

1 can tomato sauce

1 can tomato paste

1 bag frozen corn

1 can black beans

Brown 1 lb. ground turkey, drain and set aside.

In a large heated pot, add olive oil, salt, pepper and lots of garlic (we used 1/2 a garlic). Saute a couple of minutes.

Add 1 slice of jalapeno pepper (we used chopped jalapenos), 1 chopped sweet onion (we used 1/2), 1 chopped red bell pepper and a small box of sliced mushrooms. Saute over medium heat for five minutes or until soft.

Add 1 tbsp chili powder, and cook another five minutes over medium heat.

Add turkey, 1 can of whole tomatoes with water, one small can of tomato sauce, and (one small can of tomato paste…optional.) and cook for a few minutes over medium heat.

Add a bag of frozen corn and 1 can of black beans (drained) and a handful of chopped parsley, then add salt and pepper to taste.

Simmer for 20 minutes

If you like it soupy add one cup or more of chicken broth.

If you like it hot add more jalapeno or hot sauce.

Enjoy! I got too excited about eating it so this was the only picture I got...

Hunter Habit

Even though the old ones are pretty much indestructible I've been finding it a necessity to add a new pair of Hunter boots to my collection every fall. They're so versatile and I've gotten so tired of ruining all my nice shoes when a sudden rain shower pops up or a muddy lawn gets in your way. This season I'm in love with the Hunter Regent Carlyle. How cute are these? They totally look like they could be Tory Burch and at $195 a much more reasonable price. I love my Quilted Regents from last fall, a slimmer slightly chicer version of the Original Hunter, so I know these will be a hit!

Another fabulous component of our wedding was the wonderful custom paper products from Pikme Papers. After contacting Kirsten at Pikme and letting her know the theme we were working with she painted the most beautiful watercolored scallop shell. It was the perfect icon for our wedding! We went on to use this beautiful shell on our welcome bag tags, stickers, drink cards, escort cards, menu cards and our thank you notes. We were worried it would be shell overload but her beautiful painting really added so much to our big night. It made all the details seem to tie together in a perfect way. And Kirsten was a doll to work with, putting up with what seemed like hundreds of emails and questions. I want to share all the wonderful details of the wedding and the fabulous people who helped us without turning a blog about things to do in FFC into a blog about my wedding! So I decided to post one detail a week, preferably on Fridays when you're looking for something fun to do at work, until I've shared them all!

I think my most favorite detail of the wedding had to be how my bridal bouquet turned out. When our florist, Patrice, walked in with it on our wedding morning I burst into tears. It was exactly what I wanted but couldn't quite explain, somehow she read my mind. It popped perfectly against the background of bright blue sky and beautiful beach. It was stunning and I can't thank her enough. I carried it around all the way until the first dance, despite it weighing about 20lbs, until one of my bridesmaids had to pry it out of my hands. Her other flowers weren't too shabby either! : ) Each detail I saw was more beautiful than the next - the bridal bouquets, flower girl baskets, centerpieces and escort table arrangement!

If you're getting married in Cape Cod she is a must use!! Patrice's beautiful flowers also got us asked to be in the 2012 issue of Southern New England Weddings. Look for it on newsstands in early Jan!

I had the chance to spend some time on Saturday checking out adorable new Darien boutique, Spree. Local owner Lindsay was sweet enough to walk me through some of their hot items and fill me in on the fun new styles coming down the pipeline. Everything at Spree is unique and also reasonably priced. The perfect place to stop for a new top on the weekend or something stylish to update your work wardrobe. I'm not gonna lie, I got a little giddy when I saw the preview for Footloose this week. Where have I been that I didn't realize it was coming out TODAY?? Was there anything better that watching Kevin Bacon breakout his dance moves in small town USA. God I loved him...and the 80's. Footloose was by far my favorite cassette tape for much my early adolescence. How good are these songs? Let's Hear It For The Boy, get's me dancing every time.

Am I going to go see the remake? Absolutely! Is it going to be as good as 1984? I would have to guess not but I hope to be surprised.

While in Manchester for a wedding last month I stumbled across my new favorite fall sweater at Orvis. An adorable camel cable "poncho" with button details. At a mere $58 I was sold! I've worn it at least once a week since and recently have been trying to hunt down the black version. Greenwich Food & Wine Festival

Looking for something fun to do this weekend? Get your eat on at the Greenwich Food & Wine festival. Located in Rodger Sherman Baldwin Park the festival offers tastings and demonstrations from over 70 food, wine and spirit vendors. There will also be featured celebrity chefs and musical performances from Rusted Root, Sister Hazel and more. Open Saturday from 12-5 and Sunday from 11-4. There is also a Grand Tasting Gala on Saturday starting at 5pm where eight of the area's best chefs will prepare dinner tastings along with a performance by Natasha Bedingfield.

You must be 21 to attend this event.
Tickets are available for the weekend for $175 and up, or single day for $85 and up.
Tickets for the Saturday night gala are $300 and up.

Jumping In, the Second Time

I feel like I'm starting my blog all over again for the first time! I never meant to have such a long absence but the last two months have been crazy - with the wedding, hurricane Irene (which thankfully arrived the day AFTER our wedding but did delay our honeymoon a few days), a fabulous trip to Bermuda and three other amazing weddings from coast to coast! I didn't want to come back to blogging until I felt I had the time to do it consistently again and I think I finally have that time. I'm so bummed because I've missed highlighting so many wonderful things that have been going on in FFC in the last two months but I promise I'll be here to let you know about as many things as I can from now on!

While I want to get right to the good local stuff, I couldn't get back to blogging without sharing a little bit about the most important thing to me - our wedding! It was perfect to us in every way and we enjoyed ever single minute of it. We have the best friends and family in the world, who weren't scared off by the storm, and made it a day we'll never forget. We also had the most amazing vendors and I plan on sharing all of their info on the blog over the next few weeks.

One of my new favorite finds at the Rowayton Farmer's Market was Flowers by Raul. Beautiful, colorful arrangements done in vintage tin cans, galvanized buckets or traditional vases. How darling are these?!? Just looking at the bright zinnias, snap dragons and roses made me smile. I'd love to treat myself to one of these every Friday to kick off the weekend. Cruising around New Canaan on a rainy Sunday the other week we decided to look for a cozy place to treat ourselves to a guilty pleasure lunch. We drove by Gates but it just didn't have what we were looking for and then we remembered Cherry Street East. Having not been there in years we figured we'd check it out and it was perfect! Mozzarella sticks, Buffalo Chicken Wraps and a few beers later we'd enjoyed just the meal we were looking for. Everyday Inspiration

So I'm oddly obsessed with this blog...this girl Kendi gets married, moves to a small town in Texas and starts a blog on what she wears everyday. Sounds totally stupid right? Yet it's secretly amazing. She's adorable, has a great sense of style, wears mostly things from J Crew, the Gap, Target and thrift stores, and her husband is an awesome photographer. And she does this cool thing called a '30 for 30' where she limits herself to 30 items of clothing and tries to make 30 new outfits over 30 days. It's embarrassingly interesting. So maybe you'll love it, or maybe you'll say "yes, that is totally stupid" but I thought I'd share! However I'm guessing along with her over 9,000 follower that most of you will like her too!

Sorry my blogging has been less than stellar these days. There are so many fun things going on around Fairfield County and I've been remiss in filling you in on them!! But today starts the one month count down to the wedding and my head is a little spinny. I've been polished and buffed, whitened and highlighted, tanned and taught to dance. I feel like a contestant on a bad reality show - 30 days to the best you! And that doesn't even include all the wedding planning. I'm so excited for our wedding week to be here and I'm trying to soak in all these little moments along the way. So I'm going to do my best to share things along the way, perhaps without my usual loquacious comments, and I'll try to give you a few wedding tidbits as well. Thanks for sticking by me!

Key Lime Pie

What says summer more than a delicious key lime pie? Pretty much nothing! It's my all time favorite desert so I'm always on the hunt for the best of the best. I thought I'd share this recipe from my future mother-in-law. Why not whip one up this weekend??

Preheat oven to 350.

Pie Crust:

1 1/4 cups of Ginger Snap Cookie crumbs (about 1/2 bagful blended in the blender till crumbly)

1/2 cup flaked coconut

3 Tbls. sugar

1/3 cup butter or margarine, melted

In a large bowl, mix all of the above ingredients. Pack mixture into a 9” pie pan, pressing firmly to the bottom and up the sides of the pan.

Bake in a 350 oven for 8 minutes. Cool for 10 minutes.

Filling:

In a medium sized bowl, mix

one 14 oz. can of sweetened condensed milk

4 egg yolks

1/3 cup Key Lime juice

Pour into cooled pie shell.

Bake in oven for 15 minutes. Let cool, then chill in refrigerator for several hours before serving.

Optional Meringue:

Beat the 4 egg whites, in a large bowl with

1/2 tsp Cream of Tartar

Slowly add 1/2 cup sugar

Continue beating, at high speed on your mixer, till stiff peaks are formed.

Spoon meringue over the filling, spreading it gently to the edges of the crust.

Bake as instructed above.

We're headed back to the Cape Saturday for our last weekend of wedding planning and I can't wait to finalize all the little details. Our invitations have been mailed, response cards are rolling in, we have our favorite local band booked, a beautiful florist, darling wedding planner, and amazing custom stationary that I can't wait to post all about! But I've promised myself that I won't share any wedding detail until after the big day - and then watch out, it's going to be a wedding heavy few weeks! However we did get our engagement photos back recently and I figured I could share a few of those since we love our wonderful photographer so much. Summertime Chicken

Now that summer's getting into full swing we're on the lookout for new grill recipes. I found this one in an old recipe notebook and can't believe I've never tried it before, it sounds delish! I definitely plan on testing it out soon.

Grilled Prosciutto Wrapped Chicken

4 medium boneless, skinless chicken breast halves (1 1/2 lbs)
Kosher salt and freshly ground black pepper
12 large basil leaves
1/4 lb fresh mozzarella, thinly sliced
4 thin slices prosciutto
1 tbs olive oil

Cut through each piece of chicken to make a 'book'. Sprinkle with salt and pepper, layer inside with basil leaves and fresh mozzarella, close chicken and wrap with slice of prosciutto. Brush with olive oil. On medium heat, grill chicken breasts covered until they are well marked, about 4 minutes. Flip chicken every few minutes for 10-12 minutes or until done (165 degrees). You can also substitute goat cheese and spinach for a different twist!

BLT Pasta Salad

We picked up a great recipe this weekend from our snack bar and my mom came right home to make it for a BBQ that night. It's a real crowd pleaser and fairly easy to make.

Ingredients
1 box pasta (bowtie or penne)
1 package campari tomatoes
1 package bacon (1 lb)
1 head romaine lettuce
3/4 cup mayonaise (more if desired)
salt and pepper

Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Line baking sheet with parchment paper and spread out bacon strips. Bake for 20 minutes or until crisp. Boil water and cook pasta according to directions. Dice tomatoes into small pieces (quarters or smaller) and remove seeds. Chop lettuce into small strips. Remove bacon from the oven, crumble, return to pan and continue crisping another 10 minutes. Allow pasta and bacon to cool to room temperature.

Combine pasta, tomatoes, lettuce, bacon and mayo. Season with salt and pepper to taste. To make as an entree salad add grilled chicken or grilled shrimp. To serve as an appetizer omit pasta and fill filo pastry cups with BLT mixture.

With the wedding less than two months away we decided to spend the July fourth weekend in Fairfield County for the first time in as long as I can remember and I'm surprisingly excited! If you're a regular reader of this blog you know some of the many things that have a big place in my heart - books, weddings, doughnuts - but something I love almost as much as all those combined are fireworks! It started as a kid when we used to go to a friends house in Stamford and watch fireworks sitting on the rocks in the harbor. Then it grew when we used to go over to LI by boat to watch amazing fireworks set to music. By highschool you could say I was a little bit of an addict, often seeing 4 or 5 nights of fireworks in a row over the 4th. At 28 they still make my heart smile with toddler-like glee. I'm already planning my red white and blue outfits...

We're heading back to Nantucket today for my cousin and his wonderful fiancee's wedding! They have so many great activities planned over the weekend - welcome BBQ, golf tournament, rehearsal dinner, 'bubbly' brunch, and of course the main event! I can't wait to celebrate with them.
